Lynne Peyton: Building the Leaders of Tomorrow

Lynne Peyton,Child Care & Management Consultant, Management Specialist & Leadership Coach, Lynne Peyton Consulting

“There is always a way to resolve any situation”, believes Lynne Peyton. By inculcating this proactive approach within herself throughout her professional journey, Lynne has mastered the art of solving organisational challenges, developing strong leadership and supporting teams to achieve outstanding results.

Currently, Lynne is working as a Change Management Specialist and Leadership Coach at her own business, Lynne Peyton Consultancy. If any individual or business is feeling stuck, overwhelmed by the workload and pace of change, frustrated by their results, constantly striving to maintain staff, or is keen to improve professional outcomes, Lynne can help them get to the core of the issue by blasting through the limiting beliefs that hold them back.

Life-Changing Events that Shaped her Life

Looking back, Lynne believes there were 4 life-changing events that contributed to her being blessed to be doing what she loves every single day, guiding leaders in organizations, supporting children and families to get better outcomes, through more effective and focused leadership.

One was a summer job in a holiday camp in England the year she left High School. That incident exposed her to the challenges faced by seasonal workers- poverty, discrimination, potential homelessness and for many an absence of hope for the future. Her previous desire to be a French teacher was shelved and she renegotiated her university course to social studies and subsequently obtained a master’s degree in social work.

Another incident she recalls is joining the Officer Training Corps. That event started her formal leadership development journey and gave her an outlet for her insatiable appetite for trying new things, including driving tanks and jumping out of helicopters! The third event is when she was working in a family crisis center in Richmond Virginia in 1980. It made her aware of how small Ireland is in the bigger scheme of things. It whetted her appetite for thinking bigger, more multiculturally, and working internationally. Indeed, she bought a second home in Florida in 1990 and has had businesses in both countries since that time. Lynne is also a member of different global masterminds and programmes.

Last incident she recalls is completing her first Tony Robbins, Unleash the Power Within seminar in Geneva – including a firewalk. That life-changing event was instrumental in her making the decision to set up her consultancy company so that she could influence in a different way and impact more people. Having completed all of the Robbins Research ‘mastery’ programmes, Lynne was on faculty as a senior leader at events for more than 10 years.

Initial Hurdles

Initially, the biggest challenge for Lynne was getting acknowledgment that managers at all levels needed training and coaching in leadership skills. While some people are intuitively good leaders, for most people leadership skills can be learned and everyone needs coaches and mentors to help them on their leadership journey.

Another challenge is the belief that it is first-line managers who need the most support, whereas in Lynne’s experience effective change management starts at the top. According to Lynne, the value of the CORE

Leadership Development programme is that it combines individual coaching and mentoring for senior managers with a series of developmental workshops for the top team as well as experiential sessions and one–to-one coaching for first line managers. This combined programme transforms diverse, separated, and disconnected functions within organisations into one coherent team with a common vision and purpose.

Helping Organizations Cope with Constant Change

Lynne mentions that we have to meet people in their model of the world, so she always start with listening to understand the current challenges as they perceive them.

She believes that working to build a common vision and identity within the top team at an early stage is essential as they have to set the culture for the agency. This challenges them to work collaboratively and corporately at a strategic level rather than solely delivering on operational targets in their specific teams. Lynne’s CORE multi-level leadership program supports organizations in coping with constant change, by improving leadership skills in four key areas: communication skills; the capacity to optimize all of the resources at their disposal including personal time and energy; the development of key relationships; and the capacity to effectively evaluate the impact of everything they do.

Exemplifying Proficiency

Lynne states that hers is a niche market that includes statutory children’s services, fostering and adoption and mental health organisations that provide assessment and protective services to the most vulnerable in our society.

Although this is a billion-dollar market globally, employing millions of staff, for the most part it is not treated like a business and managers at all levels are not given the leadership and business skills needed to be effective. While they may excel at case management and risk analysis, they often struggle with prioritization, teambuilding, managing challenging staff and delegation.

The reason her approach works is because Lynne understands their business. Over 20 years, she held all the jobs from junior to senior management, including operational and strategic management posts in the health and social care sector including multi-agency and international roles as well as Director of a not-for-profit agency. The extra added value she brings is from the years of training in NLP and Neuroscience as well as in business and organizational change and culture.

It’s all about maintaining a Positive Mindset

While talking about the impact of Covid Lynne recalls the statement by her colleague, ‘while we are all in the same storm, we are each in our own boat’. She asserts that everyone has a unique experience of the challenges for them personally, their team and their families and the interconnection between all of those.

This is particularly true of essential workers like social workers and mental health professionals, who are delivering services at great personal risk, within ever changing lockdown restrictions (Ireland North and South, has operated stringent arrangements for several months) while working remotely. For some this has included the added responsibility of homeschooling or caring for vulnerable relatives.

The single most important leadership quality is the capacity to maintain a positive mindset, regardless of the changing circumstances and to set appropriate boundaries around work and home life, learning to say no and recognizing the need to treat each member of staff as an individual.

Adding More Value in the Years Ahead

At 67, Lynne still has incredible energy, she is still growing and developing herself and her businesses and figuring out how she can add even more value in the years ahead.

The wonderful thing about coaching is the huge number of lives you impact. Lynne has two mantras. One is to always leave people better than she found them and to reconcile that with the fact that when mentoring and coaching we need to give people what they need, rather than what they want. Identifying ways to communicate feedback kindly and relevantly is a daily challenge. Lynne states that it is wonderful to meet people years after the event and hear from them that the work her team did changed their lives. She is currently exploring a Doctorate in Professional Studies.

As they say what goes round comes around. Lynne and her husband are proud that their three adult sons are all involved in promoting leadership and education within their respective professions.

Love What you Do and Do What You Love

In her advice to emerging entrepreneurs, she says, “Love what you do and do what you love. Get clear on your purpose and how it will translate into realistic outcomes. Think out of the box when challenged in any aspect of your journey and ask – What am I not seeing? What if there was another way? Who could help me? Who could I learn from? The internet gives us access to so many inspirational leaders, male and female, but we still need coaches who will hold us accountable for delivering results and for ensuring our business is financially viable. Theory without action is called dreaming.”

Lynne’s passion is the core business of Lynne Peyton Consultancy and that is probably where she spends 70% of her time and energy because it’s where she honestly believes she makes a difference, both to the quality of services for vulnerable children, and to the satisfaction and well-being of the staff and managers dedicated to supporting them.

Wisdom for Female Leaders

To upcoming female leaders, she advises, “Be strong, be committed and do it your way.” Lynne recognises she has been lucky as only once or twice in over 40 years did she feel she may have lost out on an opportunity because she was female. She simply never believed that she did not have the same opportunity or chances as her male colleagues. She adds, “Make sure you have great people in your corner. Be coachable and get involved with other high-level thinkers. Get out of your comfort zone, be prepared to stretch yourself. Step into the unknown. The only failure is when you stop trying. As Cheri Tree, founder of BANKCODE technologies says, ‘the best way to predict the future is to create it yourself’.”

CLAIRE Hatcher: Ushering in the Future of Security

Claire Hatcher | Head of Business Development | Kaspersky Fraud Prevention

Given the scale of activities we conduct online, and the number of things now connected to the internet, there is no possible way to monitor all the security threats. To make things worse, fraud is also evolving, meaning criminals are exploiting cooperation and communication to find the weakest spots in corporate security systems and attack them. To beat fraud and ensure a seamless digital experience, Kaspersky is here to save the world with cutting-edge technologies powered by machine learning for accurate and proactive fraud prevention in real-time. Kaspersky is a global cybersecurity company founded in 1997 with its roots in antivirus solutions. Its mission is simple: to build a safer world. The company believes in a tomorrow where technology improves our lives.

Today, cybersecurity is about more than just protecting devices. It’s about developing an ecosystem where everything related to technology is immune to cyberthreats. That’s why Kaspersky expanded beyond its antivirus lab to provide cybersecurity technologies across multiple threats. With over 20 years of experience in cybersecurity, a huge portion of the Kaspersky team is engaged in R&D and detecting the latest malware and cyberthreats.

Kaspersky Fraud Prevention

Kaspersky Fraud Prevention is a division of Kaspersky born out of the company’s desire to expand its mission to ensure that enterprise clients’ money is protected from scammers. Kaspersky Fraud Prevention collaborates with banks, e-commerce, e-government services, financial service companies, and any enterprise that interacts with their users via digital channels (web or mobile) to develop solutions to protect against threats, such as banking malware and Trojans targeting consumer devices. It starts looking for threats even before the user logs in. This serves as an excellent early warning tool to prevent fraud and money laundering before any money is moved, and to block access before any damage is done.

Kaspersky Fraud Prevention provides session-based anti-fraud solutions for enterprises interacting with customers through the web and mobile digital channels. It helps cut costs on alternative authentication methods, closes gaps in security, and provides visibility of incidents and anomalies in its web console. Now enterprises can save funds on second-factor authentication and operational costs, meet customer expectations by making the authentication and login process more seamless, and detect fraudulent activity in real-time.

In contrast to other providers, Kaspersky Fraud Prevention utilizes a full analysis of the device, environment, passive behavioral biometrics, and patterns, as well as the detection of any malicious traces on the device. The Kaspersky team believes that in order to tackle fraud, the approach should be holistic. Therefore, the company is committed to developing its fraud models to uncover patterns across channels and threat vectors.

Best user verification

Kaspersky takes a holistic approach to fraud prevention. Some vendors concentrate only on device ID or behavioral biometrics, but Kaspersky takes these factors into account along with 150 other parameters to determine if a session is legitimate. For example, if someone logged in to a particular user session using the Tor browser, other systems may flag that user to be blocked. However, there may be a legitimate reason for using that browser. It’s only when you analyze this behavior along with other aspects of a typical user or group behavior that a pattern emerges to show if something suspicious is going on. Also, as scammers have gotten better at persuading consumers to provide sensitive information, such as one-time passcodes (OTP), to complete their access/transaction, the responsibility has fallen to models to uncover signs that someone may be falling victim to a social engineering attack.

A significant impact

Kaspersky operates in over 200 countries with offices in 30 countries, so the effects of the pandemic have naturally been wide-reaching. Employees have been working from home to ensure their safety, but now that the lockdown measures of some countries have relaxed, certain offices have been allowed to reopen. However, team members are not under any pressure to return to the office, as everyone’s personal circumstances are different. The option is available in some cities if people prefer, but the majority of staff are still working from home for their own safety and to protect their families. Due to the nature of Kaspersky’s operations, i.e., essentially a technology company that helps businesses ensure secure remote connectivity, it was already well-positioned to work from home in a secure way. The company has virtual collaboration tools in place for remote meetings, so nobody is ever too far away if they need to chat about an idea.

When the pandemic hit, cybersecurity and protecting consumers online became ever-more important, with new scams and threats emerging that attempted to capitalize on the immediacy and uniqueness of the situation companies were facing. At Kaspersky, its mission statement is to “Save the World” and for Claire Hatcher, Global Head of Fraud Prevention Solutions, this message never felt more important than at a time when many traditional businesses were forced to move online.

A great asset to Kaspersky

In 2019, Claire Hatcher joined Kaspersky as a firm believer in collaborative fraud fighting and the importance of knowledge exchange in the field of cybersecurity. She has been at the forefront of the latest ideas and approaches in combatting fraud in finance, e-commerce, and the digital sector as a whole. Claire is confident that building a world immune to fraud is possible via effective collaboration. When she represents the Kaspersky brand at industry events, she focuses on topics such as the effect of the pandemic on the fraud industry, the rise of new technologies, and the best practices in preventing fraudulent activity in the digital channel of enterprises.

A good example of Claire’s input would be her support for Polys, Kaspersky’s Innovation Hub project aimed at developing and promoting a secure online voting platform for a variety of institutions, from business enterprises and schools to political parties.

The next-gen platform

Kaspersky Fraud Prevention plans to continue tuning its model to verticals beyond financial services in order to draw on holistic fraud trends occurring across verticals and channels. Thanks to its focus on session-based anti-fraud, the company is already fighting against fraud in markets outside of financial services. Its holistic approach encompasses over 150 different data attributes, using machine learning techniques across a variety of threat vectors, i.e., behavioral biometrics, device and environment analysis, behavioral analysis and malware detection. Kaspersky plans to continue these efforts to target fraud by analyzing more data attributes, especially when it comes to next-generation bots, passive biometrics, and social engineering techniques.

Testimonials

Anvar Sidorov, Director of Partnerships at Indacoin, provided his commentary: “The crypto exchange has many unique features, but in general, we share the main risks of financial institutions: security of cards and payment information, as well as security of personal accounts and safety of client’s funds. The implementation of Kaspersky Fraud Prevention helped to identify highly targeted fraud schemes, identify dishonest users with advanced precision and implement machine learning in the verification system.”

Leadership is Action, Not Position

Leaders are those who inspire themselves and others to do the right things at the right time. They build an inspiring vision, set direction and create something new which is capable of changing the gridlocked beliefs. Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go and “win” as a team or an organization; and the approach is quit dynamic, exciting, and inspiring. Yet, while leaders set the direction, they are also expected to use management skills guiding their people to the right destination, in a smooth and efficient way. Leaders must lead by an example along with overriding vision and purpose. They possess an unquenchable passion for successfully implementing the vision of the company regardless of the disapproval of those individuals who fail to see the bigger picture.

Emblems of Being an Effective Leader

An effective leader is a person who creates an inspiring vision of the future, motivates and inspires people to share the same vision, stays at the helm of each and every ongoing process and coaches and builds a team to achieve the vision.

Effective leadership has a lot to do with knowing your own business and being able to analyze the existing relationships among the different departments, as well as the way your employees interact with each other. By analyzing the internal function of your company, you will get the most of your team, optimize your resources and encourage a spirit of cooperation.

Acknowledge and Appreciate

Who doesn’t want to be valued? It is essential as a leader to give your people credit and recognition for the incredible things they do. One of the reasons people leave a job is because they feel underappreciated. A leader should never take the credit for the work that their people do. A good leader is a generous leader who recognizes people. Work recognition into the culture of your team. Make a conscious effort to call out your top producers in a recurring meeting. When others see a coworker being recognized, it infuses motivation into your team. Everyone will work harder to be the next person whose hard work is recognized.

Empowering Everyone

Everyone wants to be trusted to make decisions. Empower your people to make certain decisions. Allow them with the opportunities to shine rather than discounting their abilities and doing it yourself. Trust will make them confident and help them strive for larger-than-life goals.

Leadership is both a gift and a privilege. You can erode the cohesion of your team if you fail to value them. Each one of them performs an essential part to keep the engine of your company running. When you can put your people’s needs and interests before your own, you will be a more successful leader.

Example of Empowering Leadership

Jack Welch exhibited leadership as chief executive officer (CEO) of General Electric Co. from 1981 to 2001. He played an integral part in 600 acquisitions in emerging markets and increased GE’s market value from $12 billion to $505 billion. Because things are constantly changing, Welch insisted everyone at GE embrace change. To continue evolving company operations and producing greater output, managers and employees had to continuously reinvent themselves and their work. Welch hired managers who shared his vision of GE, had endless amounts of energy, and were able to encourage employees to stay engaged in their work. He sought managers who created, developed and refined ideas for the future, and found ways to make them a reality. As a result of Welch’s leadership style, managers and employees were more empowered, products gained higher quality, and customer satisfaction and profits increased dramatically.

Conflict Management

If you are a leader, you have a responsibility not only to solve the conflicts that will be inevitably generated within your team but also to be able to detect them before it is too late to fix them. In conflict resolution, it is essential to know your peers. Ask, listen to different versions, show empathy and act with justice.

Creativity and Thoroughness

The definition of leadership also has to do with creativity. Good leaders are able to create an environment that will encourage all the members of their team to develop their skills and imagination so that they can contribute to the common project and vision of the company. If you want to lead successfully, respect the creativity of others and learn from the people around you; their ideas will surely prove to be positive for you.

A good leader sets the bar high for their people because they want to reach the goals and make the best of their teams. In addition to this thoroughness, the leader must know how to listen, in order to know the needs of the people, and then provide the necessary time and resources for them to do their job properly, and therefore meet what is demanded of them.

Risk Taker

The leader is the one responsible for taking the risks that others are not willing to take. They are confident enough to make a decision, and if they make a mistake, the leader must have the courage to rectify, assume their guilt and take the right path, without blaming it on the team. Good leaders know how to get ahead of their time, they see opportunities where others can’t and know how to spread the enthusiasm for their vision to try to make it real.

Improving Thyself

True leadership seeks continuous improvement. Leaders have the ability to turn the people in their teams into stars, people who have improved and developed their skills through the influence of their leader. In short, the definition of leadership has nothing to do with the hierarchy or position of anyone in the company; it has nothing to do with imposing views but with listening to those who know.

Leadership is the attitude assumed by those looking for something different, who are committed to achieving a goal and whose conviction they manage to transmit to others through enthusiasm and optimism to reach a common goal. They exude a passionate energy that rubs off on others around them. They have a light, effortless, and clear persona that is projected to everyone they meet because they are so in tune with their work. Others feel this and want to be a part of the vision that the leader is bringing forward.

Optimism

Productive leadership shows optimism and provides positive energy for staff. Leaders are helpful by nature and truly concerned about others’ well-being. Leaders find answers to challenges and are the first to reassure and inspire workers when things do not go according to plan. Leaders find ways for staff to work together and achieve maximum results in an efficient and effective manner. Optimistic leadership sees where the company is headed and plans the steps needed to get there. Visualizing what is possible, following trends in the industry, and taking risks to grow the business are all required of leaders.

Great leaders never quit. They embrace and overcome any obstacles, personal or otherwise, that stand in their way. Thus, they need to do the necessary work on themselves to prevent anything from holding them and eliminate habits that are keeping from being the best leader possible”.

Ellen Voie: Empowering Women into Most Powerful Positions

Women appreciate flexible work arrangements, fair compensation, and inclusive corporate cultures that encourage and support women’s professional development and advancement. It is important to find resources, best practices, innovative ideas, and content to ensure such corporate cultures. These changes all lead to women’s empowerment. Ellen Voie’s whole career has been in empowering women, and therefore she is one of the most admirable women leaders in business. As Founder of the Women In Trucking Association in March of 2007, Ellen Voie now serves as the nonprofit organization’s President/CEO. The group’s mission is to promote women’s employment in the trucking industry, encourage and support them, remove obstacles that might keep them from succeeding, and celebrate its members’ successes.

Earlier Sense of Timeliness

Ellen says that losing her mom at an early age gave her a sense of timeliness. She felt that she had to push herself to achieve everything possible in a short amount of time because Ellen did not know how many years she had to accomplish her goals. Her mom also believed in her and encouraged and supported her before she was diagnosed with a fatal illness (ALS) when she was a teenager.

Promoting Gender Diversity in Workforce

The Women In Trucking Association’s mission is to make women aware of career opportunities and mentor and assist them as they become more successful in their roles. Women In Trucking Association is not limited to women only, as 15 percent of its members are men who believe in the association’s goals. Many companies in transportation are reaping the benefits of stable workforce diversity. Gender diversity brings new perspectives, fuels more significant idea generation, problem-solving, and innovation, increasing business performance and overall revenue generation. Access to relevant market intelligence, content, networking, collaboration, and best practices helps achieve this. Ellen has a vital role in promoting gender diversity.

Changing the Image of the Trucking Industry

Ellen’s first challenge was in starting a nonprofit association in the middle of a recession (2007). Creating an organization requires a strong commitment, both financial and personal. She knew that she had to prove that Women In Trucking Association is a viable group that would provide a valuable resource to its members. In its first year, it attracted 500 members, which was impressive considering it was a challenging year for everyone. The next biggest challenge Ellen faced as an organization was in changing the image of the trucking industry. Too many people view careers as drivers as being something only men can do. This isn’t the case. Many women see these trucks as just a diesel engine and smokestacks instead of all the technology that makes the truck easier to operate and ultimately much safer for both the driver and those on the road around the truck.

The pandemic has strengthened the group’s mission by proving the value the trucking industry brings to the economy. Professional drivers were on the front line, delivering the needed supplies while putting their health at risk. Professional drivers brought toilet paper, sanitizer, food, and gas to the public while their safety was compromised. Restaurants and rest areas were closed, reducing the places drivers could access sanitary facilities and decent meals. Yet, they did their job without complaining. The non-trucking public has seen the trucking industry’s importance and how jobs are still stable and available.

Supported by a Passionate Leadership Team

The organization is supported by a passionate leadership team, highly engaged members, and committed sponsors and partners. Women In Trucking Association has five employees and an association management firm that supplies six more staff members, all working in a virtual environment, making collaboration even more challenging. However, the group’s work culture promotes both independence and self-motivation. Ellen believes in a results-oriented work environment, so she doesn’t monitor hours or days, and vacations and time off is unlimited. The caveat is that each of its team members has a job to do, and they are responsible for ensuring that the job is done. In other words, Ellen treats people like adults and asks them to do their job. If someone wants a day off, they are free to do so, as long as they don’t compromise any commitments.

Valuable as a Board Member

For Ellen, her training as an association executive and her certification (CAE) makes her valuable as a board member for other nonprofit associations. She started both a trade/professional IRS 501(c)(6) association and a charitable 501(c)(3) foundation, so her insight has been sought out by other organizations. She knows how to write by-laws, work with a board and a staff and still serve its members, so she is often asked to serve on other nonprofit boards. This is her way of contributing.

Edith N. Nordmann: Helping Businesses Mitigate Risks and Navigate the Pitfalls

No great leaders were built without genuinely loving what they do. Edith N. Nordmann has set the same example. Getting at a case with a motivated team and a strong adversary puts a big smile on Edith’s face every morning.

Edith is the Managing Partner at ACG International. In her role she is responsible to select the best team for each assignment. This is quite different than in any other law firm as she really looks for the best team for each and every job searching at various firms to get just the right people. She wants the best result for her clients and not keeping her own lawyers busy if they are not the right fit for an individual project. For this, she uses the enormous network that she has built up personally in the last 20 years with trusted colleagues all over the world.

Exemplifying Proficiency

Along with being Managing Partner at ACG, Edith is also the Chairman of the Netherlands India Chamber of Commerce and Trade (NICCT) and the Vice chairman of the Supervisory Board of the biggest Housing Corporation in the Netherlands.

In addition, Edith is also an experienced corporate and commercial litigator, with an expert qualification in employment law and is an international ADR certified mediator. She is specialized in cross border business transactions and combines all these skills and expertise for the benefit of her international clients assisting them in getting deals done and finding solutions that achieve the best results for their actual needs.

Being fluent in German (native speaker), English, Dutch, French and Italian, Edith understands difference in mentality, culture and legal systems, assisting her clients in a unique way.

Besides, Edith is also a public speaker on various international conferences and engages in many charitable and social organizations using her professional expertise, not only to help others but also empowering them in their endeavors.

Beyond a Conventional Team of Attorneys

ACG International goes beyond a conventional team of attorneys. While its law firm consists of highly experienced practitioners, ACG International also provides each of its clients with a unique access to a broader network of professionals. It works side-by-side with attorneys from across the world, specialized in different jurisdictions, legal systems and areas of law, which allows the company to assist its clients in the most profound way.

The challenge is to win the international clients’ trust as the system works differently in a different country.

Besides, ACG encourages its people to join and to contribute to society as well. Pay it forward is an important philosophy within ACG International.

Maintaining Personal Relationships

According to Edith, the focus of many other law firms during the COVID-19 was on saving their own business instead of saving their clients’ business. Edith and her ACG team focused on their clients’ needs right away. She believes that more than ever a trusted personal relationship is important. Especially in cross border businesses, law firms fully need to understand the cultural differences in order to being able to assist their clients in the best possible way. She asserts, “Everyone thinks that his home situation – business wise as well as legally – is normal. That’s why we as service providers need to understand what our clients think that “normal” is and explain them from there how the current situation deviates from their normal and what this means – especially during a time of crisis.”

“If you just carry on with your routine not taking this into consideration you will lose your client’s trust along the way,” she adds.

Ensuring Comfort to Clients

Sustaining operations so far has not been a problem for ACG. As the firm has been working with its clients for many years, it knows where its clients would probably need its support and the organization offered it directly by also explaining why they needed it.

Edith is of the opinion that explaining upfront how things are going to be, makes clients at ease and trust the company. This all leads to smooth continuation of the operations and comfort to ACG’s clients.

The firm is fortunate to have been given the chance on various occasions to mitigate risks for companies in International Trade and Innovation. It makes sure that choices are not primarily tax-driven but want to understand how they are business-driven. Together with its specialists worldwide, the firm then line up the top 3 scenarios – of course including tax – also taking into account the reputational risks of the scenarios.

This is how it has won tenders from much bigger competitors in the field.

ACG International is further planning to expand its network further with inspiring and dedicated people in order to strengthen the quality it can deliver to its clients.

It’s all About Focusing on Your Burning Desire

In her advice to aspiring women entrepreneurs in the Employment Law, Litigation, & Alternative Dispute Resolution Industry, she emphasizes on studying hard continuously and pursuing quality.

“Be very honest about what you are really good at and what your burning desire is. A burning desire means that you will go for it day after day, go to sleep with it and wake up with the spirit to work on it. Money is not a burning desire – money is a result of your success. Therefore, don’t choose something because you think you can earn the most. This will not work,” Edith advises.

With aforesaid she also asserts, “And don’t try to be like a man – be yourself!”

Elena Turanskaya: An Inspiration for Emerging Women Leaders

Every inspiring story has different touch of inspiration. Sometimes, it is all about taking a stance, being a survivor, having compassion and sometimes it is dedication, hard work and unwavering focus. Elena Turanskaya’s success journey is one such story which shows sheer dedication, compassion, and result of constant learning.

Elena started her journey when she was a first-year student at the university. She joined the ADD Grup as an assistant marketing manager. She was the youngest worker in the organization, no experience, no knowledge, but a lot of desire to learn, to bring a fresh breath, new ideas and new vision. With hard work, lots of criticism, fights with the Soviet heritage and 2 years later she had her own section consisting of 3 people, including her. After that she became the head of the department, then general manager of the production plant, and she is CEO of the holding. She asserts “It was a long and exciting way and still a lot to achieve ahead.”

In an interview with CIO Look, Elena Turanskaya shares the insight of her version of leadership, challenges she faced and gives advice to upcoming leaders.

Below are the highlights of the interview:

What were the challenges you came across since founding the organization in 1992?

I joined the company in 1998 and I was very proud to be a part of the innovative company. People in Moldavia in the late 90’s were still Soviet-minded, meaning short sighted, very conservative and were not very open to any new adventures. I had to break that somehow. It was not easy, but I love people, I listened and learned from them, and that was the way to their hearts and their minds.

Being an experienced business leader, what is your opinion regarding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the electronic manufacturing industry? And how has ADD Grup managed to overcome this significant challenge?

COVID-19 has indisputably created a slow-down of economies and industries worldwide. Electronic industry is not an exception, especially that it all started in China, – the biggest supplier of the electronic components in the world. Besides component delivery delays due to lock-down we had to face supply chain issues related to cancellation of flights, as well as land and sea transport routes. COVID-19 itself did not come unnoticed at our company as we had to shut down for a while due to large quantity of infected employees. Still, we recovered and managed to catch up with our obligations towards our customers and partners.

Despite the negative effect of COVID-19 over economies worldwide we still are able to see some potential positive outcomes. We are in smart metering industry and COVID-19 being on the one hand a stopper of smart metering deployments and a reason for delay or postponement of many projects is at the same time a trigger for smart metering rollouts for the countries that were previously reluctant to prepare their smart metering roadmaps.

In the lockdown period it was determined that usage of smart meters greatly facilitates life for consumers as well as for electricity distributors. With mandatory social distancing and isolation smart metering removes necessity for personal presence of the controller to check the indications, disconnect or reconnect consumer due to payment issues. Electricity distributors can easily determine load peaks, check every user indication and avoid accidents on lines.

Thus, in the next few years we expect business to grow again and maybe at a much higher pace than it was expected a year ago.

What is your thought on the necessity of a positive work culture? In what ways do you implement it at your organization?

Because people are spending a lot of their time at work, certainly there should be the positive culture within an organization. Coming to work we need to enjoy the work, communication with the colleagues and get satisfaction from what we do. The company has created an internal Code of Ethics that describes company values (professionalism, mutual respect, openness for dialogue, etc). It governs relationships between company management and employees preventing abuse and discrimination, encouraging and appreciating initiative, as well as relationships between employees encouraging team building inside specific departments as well as between the departments.

According to you, what could be the next big change in the electrical manufacturing industry?

Certainly, it is difficult to assess electrical manufacturing industry as a whole, given that we are just in a specific segment of Smart Metering and Smart Grid. But if we speak about our domain, we expect times of deep integration between Smart Metering and Smart Grid components, enabling precise and safe adaptation of electrical grid to dynamic change of demand and supply of electricity.

Last few years there is a discussion about possible introduction of AI (Artificial intelligence) into smart meters to enable inferring when and how often particular appliances are used in the home through load disaggregation or non-intrusive load monitoring algorithms. This will make even deeper integration already on the level of Smart Home with the ultimate goal to help consumer use electricity in most optimal way. Increased resource efficiency will result in lower utility bills for homeowners, with the opportunity to repurpose savings toward healthcare, education, and other needs.

In what ways have you or ADD Grup contributed to the community? If given a chance, what change would you bring to help other utility companies?

Probably here we could speak about global and local contribution. On a global scale where we delivered around 7 million smart meters to more than 30 countries, our smart metering solution has a multipurpose contribution. Below are few of them-

  • Detection and prevention of electricity theft.
  • Remote metering and accurate bills
  • Load management
  • Multi-tariff metering.
  • Detailed energy consumption pattern
  • Power quality control
  • Integration of renewable generation.

On a local scale we have created jobs to almost 400 people. We are among the largest exporters in our home country contributing to country GDP growth and to decreasing negative balance in trade deficit. We are for many years the third largest taxpayer in electronic industry in our home country thus contributing to improvement of economic situation of our country. We are an active participant in Alliance of Electronics Manufacturers in Moldova and contribute with our advice and initiatives for improvement of legislation and regulations that would help the electronic industry become more competitive on global scale.

What would be your advice for aspiring and emerging women entrepreneurs in the electronic management industry?

This advice will be for all women: Love people, enjoy what you do, appreciate your good and bad experience, always be yourself and never stop, no matter what!

Have you in any ways contributed towards the cause of women empowerment.

Probably not in a direct way. Smart Metering and Smart Gird is a men’s world given that most decision-makers are male. I am one of those women who with own example can show that men and women have equal potential in any industry.

What people, what books, what life factors have influenced and impacted you?

I would characterize myself as an old-school person used to learn from books and great authors digging deep into analysis and making my own conclusions rather than looking on the web for easy answers. Besides personal preferences for books a great variety have been read through mandatory programs at the universities and as I have graduated from several universities in Moldova as well as studied in US, this created opportunities to learn from many great Russian, European and American authors and better understand cultures, mentality and values.  This has created a positive impact on interaction with partners and customers from more than 30 countries, where our company has implemented smart metering projects.

Probably the most relevant to mention for today would be “Only the paranoid survive” by Andrew Grove that teaches how to use crisis period as a launch pad for growth.

What is your vision for the company for the next five years?

Europe is closing in terms of smart electricity metering as most of countries have already decided over their smart metering rollouts and have chosen the suppliers. Now it is time to move to Middle East and Latin America where the processes have just started, and we are able not only to become part of those but given a vast experience can also become influencers in regard to technology and standards that shall finally be demanded in the projects.

For the water metering we are just making first steps in the industry. Despite this, we already have raised a lot of interest among potential partners in Europe and Middle East through the innovative approach in design of water metering solution and they are impatiently waiting for the product to be certified.

Despite a big quantity of projects, we are expecting from the B2B market segment an aggressive pricing policy from Chinese competitors makes it less and less attractive. Therefore, we are seriously investing into B2C solutions where innovations play the most important role.

Deanna Latson: Changing Lives on a Global Scale

International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. This month’s CIO Look Issue celebrates female business leaders who influence positive change throughout the world, and Deanna Latson is the inspirational leader we’ve chosen to feature in our cover story.

When you meet Deanna Latson, you know you’re in the presence of someone exceptional. A phenom. A phoenix. An incredible, inspiring force.

The only female corporate officer in NewAge, Inc., an internationally recognized social selling health and wellness company, Deanna embodies confidence, competence, and ingenuity. As NewAge’s Chief Product Officer, Deanna’s knowledge of and dedication to the purity and potency of the company’s products are unapparelled. A wellness authority and fearless nutritional pioneer, she has been the keynote speaker at almost 1,000 colleges, including Stanford and NYU, and regularly works with major companies on issues of health and nutrition.

In 2019, Deanna logged more than 200,000 miles traveling the world to educate and support customers, representatives, and communities. She continues, amid this worldwide pandemic, to spread her message, and in 2020 Deanna has held empowering webinars in more than 50 countries.

Well-Earned Accolades

Among her other accolades, Deanna is the recipient of a total of 20 professional awards, having been named Woman of the Year, Female Executive of the Year, and Innovator of the Year from the prestigious Stevie® Awards, One Planet® Awards, Golden Bridge® Awards, and Women World® Awards. In addition, Deanna has received another 20 awards from the same award organizations naming her a contributor to the success of the company in her role as an executive leader in categories such as Executive Team of the Year, Management Team Achievements, Most Innovative Company of the Year, Best Company of the Year, etc.

Man or woman, her list of accomplishments is impressive.

But it is her personal story and uncompromising commitment to her beliefs that are truly extraordinary.

‘Staying Power’ Philosophy

After witnessing the power of the human body through her own journey overcoming an eating disorder and watching family members suffer from serious illnesses, she became interested in nutritional education. A certified nutritionist consultant with a master’s degree in health communication, Deanna worked as an educator at San Francisco State University for a number of years. Through lectures and trying to reach students, she realized her message for well-being could best be spread through a career in public speaking. Discouraged by others from pursuing her topic of health and wellness and told public speaking was a “man’s world,” she refused to be dissuaded. “Nothing was going to rock my boat,” she said. It is that fierce determination and strong sense of self that forms the basis of Deanna’s “staying power” philosophy. And it is that staying power that created the wings that have carried her to soaring heights in her professional career.

The way Deanna explains it, all professional endeavors have ups and downs. She says many people quit and give up on their dreams right before they’re about to make a breakthrough, usually because they feel unworthy or not good enough. She says staying power means you can’t falter or give in to those feelings, which are a normal part of the process. True staying power means the difference between a 99 percent commitment and a 100 percent commitment. That even a one percent chance leaves too much opportunity to give up. Your goal must be “non-negotiable.”

In her journey, Deanna has encountered others who are smarter or more talented. But she succeeded when they didn’t because she stayed 100 percent committed to her goal. Deanna says this level of commitment is scary because, “It’s a big jump. The biggest jump.” But one she believes can be achieved by anyone.

Helping Other Women Find Success

While Deanna’s message for success through tenacious commitment has no gender bounds, she has advocated this belief, and her story, in a tireless effort to teach and empower other women.

As the only C-level executive in a major company, Deanna is well aware of the disparity in the number of women in high-level positions. Yet, Deanna never felt obstacles being a female. From a young age, she learned to thrive in male-dominated industries. Her father worked in law enforcement, and her family also owned several paint and wallpaper stores. By age 12, she knew how to fix a pressure washer and worked daily with contractors who were almost exclusively men.

If these unique experiences gave her an edge, she has made great efforts to share it by becoming a trailblazer in helping other women find success.

As a NewAge executive, Deanna regularly speaks with women from all over the world. She views these experiences as a privilege and embraces them with great passion and responsibility. In her observations, women, unlike men, often hesitate to display confidence or express their wins. To this end, she has organized a multitude of global empowerment and self-improvement events for women, including leading firewalking and arrow-breaking ceremonies, board–breaking activities and other events in many countries such as China, Australia, Indonesia, Bali and others. These activities offer an element of danger if the participant isn’t fully committed and are designed to help women work through the perceived threat, thereby conquering their fears and limitations. The results are nothing less than miraculous as women are shocked by their own strength and perseverance. It’s the successes the women experience that teach them that they CAN overcome limitations, objections and male-imposed barriers. The trust Deanna inspires in her audience allows their participation in these powerful events that help them overcome obstacles to create lasting change in their lives.

Deanna encourages women to let go of their doubts and to be themselves. She explains that being a woman in a powerful position doesn’t mean you have to act like a “tough guy.” She is adamant that leadership doesn’t require you to hide your emotions. On the contrary, as a woman, your authenticity and empathy are powerful tools.

Finding Balance

Deanna says the biggest challenge women confide in her is balancing family and work. In speaking with women from hundreds of countries across most of the major continents, this concern of work-life balance is universal regardless of culture or upbringing. Yet, fascinatingly, and perhaps not surprisingly, she has never once heard this concern from a man.

As a single mother, Deanna is no exception to the worry of balancing family and career. From her own personal and understanding viewpoint, she advises women that her approach to effectively straddling those two worlds is to be fully present when she is home and with her children. Deanna explains there is a difference between being physically present and making the most of every moment with her kids. Whenever possible, she brings her children with her on her travels, including them in as many avenues as possible in her professional life. She says, “I want them to know what I’m doing.”

Building Connection is the Key

In her vast experience speaking with women, Deanna has also learned that many assumptions are made about women in leadership positions. “A lot of women look at me and think I’m so strong. But I’m not good at everything in life. I struggle sometimes. I have personal hardships.” She explains that what links us as human beings is that regardless of who we are and where we come from, we all experience hardships unique to our own lives. Even if you are perceived as successful or seem like you have it all together, there’s always a backstory. It’s this kind of transparency and vulnerability that Deanna shares about herself and her difficulties that give her strength and help her make connections with others.

Connection is a key ingredient in Deanna’s efforts to empower women. In addition to helping them face their fears and claim their powers of empathy and authenticity, Deanna teaches female representatives how to tap into their naturally social natures to connect with NewAge’s predominantly female client-customer base. This woman-to-woman connection has helped countless female representatives find a path to financial success and security through social selling. With Deanna’s passion and continuing efforts toward helping other women, she is on track in assisting NewAge meet its goal of becoming the number one social selling company in the world!

For Deanna, the future will continue to include her efforts to help women (and men!) realize their true potential. It also means working hard to continue creating the best products on the market and continuing to get to know the people in NewAge’s social network of representatives, which she considers the best part of her job. “I actually feel the world is small,” she says. “We’re all dealing with our own stuff and trying to learn and grow from the hardships we face. And while each person’s experience is individual, we all share the same human story of wanting to be the best person we can be, for ourselves and our families. In this, we are all the same.”

Women in business: Challenges & Opportunities

Women leadership is trending. As some women have a more important role in business, there are other professional women and entrepreneurs taking classes and courses to get all the credibility they need to get into executive positions.

Every day, we understand better that it is not just about women leadership being positive, but also the reasons for it to be that way. It improves the diversity and the innovation profile of the companies. It is demonstrated that diversity is a value and creates a competitive advantage.

The role of women in business.

We all know that a certain business culture gets enriched when it can integrate more successful profiles in an easier way. There is an organizational change that strengthens and makes it capable of facing new environments and opportunities.

Given the potential for major disruption, the future still provides tremendous opportunities for women and society, as robots take on more cognitive tasks. Work that demands more emotional intelligence and empathy, such as skills that have historically been identified with women, tends to be regarded more highly by society.

The different women leadership styles conjunct perfectly with men. The interaction of both avoids that the organization becomes monolithic and as well, the diversity offers an ampler vision that helps to discover problems, solutions and efficiently detecting the opportunities. As well, it reflects in the earnings and losses of the company.

Challenges for Women in Business

Stereotyping and Gender Discrimination

  • Gender discrimination is applied whenever someone gets treated differently due to their gender in employment, which still happens in several industries to women. It is now a civil rights violation which has helped to reduce the impact of these in a significant way.

Work-Life Balance

  • This is a goal for many, regardless the gender, but as a woman, it has been very disruptive that the usual now it is not being a full-time mom or being the whole time at home to take care of their families, it has been changing a lot through the years, and it has helped women to have a more balanced life with their jobs, families, and free time.

Lack of Equal Opportunities in Some Industries

  • Women are paid less and have fewer opportunities in some industries. Because of their gender, certain doors are closed entirely to them, such as in heavy construction or engineering. Many firms stop recruiting women of childbearing age because they do not want to deal with the problems that come with maternity leave.

Empowerment and Opportunities for Women in Business

Women possess life skills and innate abilities that are helpful in the workplace. They are generally good at networking, have natural negotiating skills, are great at multitasking, delegating, and are also budgeting experts. Here are some ways in which companies can help and empower women.

Flexibility in the Work Environment

Employees will strike a balance between their job and personal lives when their workplace is flexible. Women play several roles, including wives, caregivers, and breadwinners. Flexible scheduling conditions give women the much-needed balance they need to balance their various responsibilities at work and at home.

Closing the Pay Gap

Pay equity audits are the best place to start because women in the United States earn about 80% of what men earn. Look for inconsistencies in pay scales and ensure that all workers with the same level of experience and in the same position are paying fairly.

Management Diversification

Getting talented women in leadership positions will continue to promote and develop expectations for those just starting out in the workforce or looking to progress. Encourage women to take advantage of resources at all levels.

You illustrate to women that they and their skills are important assets to your company by promoting them at the same pace as men.

Working women are here to stay, so if you want talented women leaders to stay with your organization, it is time to give them what they want from work. Through the years the women empowerment has been really taking off even when the future of work has been changing rapidly, there is still a lot to do, but we are in the right place for women to start taking leadership, executive positions, and several different roles in bigger, smaller, or even self-owned companies.
